The cottage dates from the 17th century and from 1720 was home to the rector of Birchanger the Reverend Joseph Spence who was Oxford Professor of Poetry and a close friend of Alexander Pope. It is a Listed Building in two acres of mature gardens overlooking fields and woods.

The comfortable reception rooms are oak panelled and full of character, the larger of the two sitting rooms has a wood-burning stove.

Breakfast is served in the conservatory-style dining room, facing east over the lawns and yew hedges, which can be bathed in sunshine during breakfast.
